Black Sesame (Sesamum indicum) is a non-GMO heirloom that is as attractive in the garden as it is useful in the kitchen. The upright plants carry soft, bell-shaped flowers followed by pods packed with glossy black seeds that taste great toasted.
Growing Tips
- Sesame loves heat. Sow after the soil has warmed to about 70°F; usually 2–3 weeks after your last frost date.
- Sow 1/4–1/2 inch deep in full sun and well-drained soil; thin to 6–8 inches apart.
- Once established, plants handle dry spells well.
- Harvest when the lower pods turn brown: cut the stalks, dry them upside down in a paper bag, and collect the seeds as the pods split.
Black sesame seeds are a classic ingredient in Asian and Indian cooking, from sweets and brittles to garnishes and sauces. 100 seeds per pack.
