With vibrant pink-purple leaves, this orach (Atriplex hortensis) can add so much beauty to your garden and salad bowl. It is also known by the names French spinach and mountain spinach. It is very easy to grow and is more bolt resistant than the normal spinach varieties. Harvest young leaves for salads in about 30 days, or let plants grow larger for cooking like spinach.
Orach FAQ
When should I plant orach?
Sow in early spring 2–4 weeks before last frost. Warm regions (zones 8–10): late winter and fall. It handles warmth better than spinach but still bolts in summer heat.
Is orach the same as sea purslane?
No. Orach is Atriplex hortensis, also called French or mountain spinach; sea purslane is a different plant.
How do I harvest it?
Pick young leaves and tips often; pinching tops keeps plants bushy and delays flowering.
